Vernell Harbin

Vernell Harbin of Canyon, Texas passed away peacefully in her home on December 16th, 2024. She was 101 years of age. She will be remembered for her sweet kind spirit and her strong can-do attitude and will.

Vernell Harbin was born on August 23, 1923, in Pecan Gap, Texas. The family moved to Memphis, Texas and then eventually settled on a farm in Whitharrel, Texas. She graduated from Whitharrel High School in 1941 where she met her future husband, Ralph. She and Ralph married on January 19th, 1952, in Muleshoe, Texas. Vernell and Ralph had four children: Clarissa, Cassi, Pam, and David.

They settled in Canyon in 1956 where Ralph became an agriculture professor at West Texas State University. They initially lived as dorm parents at a residence hall on campus and then at the college dairy which Ralph managed. Ralph built their home on Hillcrest Drive in Canyon in 1963 where they raised their children and Vernell lived until her passing.

Vernell worked various jobs throughout her career including time at the Panhandle Plains Museum, as a bookkeeper at ET Cummings accounting, and 20 years as an executive secretary at the First National Bank of Canyon. Vernell was widowed at the age of sixty-one and soon retired. She was active in her church and community. There was not anything she could not do or at least try. She loved woodworking, painting, sewing, and working in her yard.

She is survived by daughters Cassi Harbin and Pam Lewis and son David Harbin and wife Libby, grandchildren Bonnie Stimm, Landon Lewis and wife Anna, Scott Harbin and wife Jordan, and Brett Harbin, and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband Ralph, her daughter Clarissa Ham, grandsons Mike Ham and Matt Harbin, and granddaughter Julie Ham. What a joyous reunion they are having!

A Celebration of Life will be held at The University Church of Christ in Canyon at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 20th. Visitation with the family will be Thursday, December 19th from 6:00-7:30 PM at Brooks Chapel in Canyon.

The family asks in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to High Plains Children's Home in Amarillo, Texas, or the Ralph Harbin Memorial Scholarship Fund at West Texas State A&M University.
