Verley was born on October 22, 1945 in Amherst, Texas to Lawayne and Ernestine (Gatlin) Vernon. Just out of high school, he entered the U.S. Naval Air and served for four years, the last nine months on the USS Saratoga. He married Dolores Williams on September 11, 1971 in Muleshoe. They spent 20 years in Canadian where he worked as a pumper for the oil fields. His work then took them to Woodward, OK until moving to Canyon upon retirement.
Verley's family lovingly referred to him as a workaholic. He loved working and when he got home after a long day at work, he enjoyed getting on his Kubota tractor and working some more. You could always find Dolores sharing in every task, mostly building or working on fences on their place in Woodward, as they loved working together.
Verley is preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Dolores Vernon of the home; daughter, Tonia Meadows and husband, Ben of Briscoe; son, Todd Vernon and wife, Cindy of Amarillo; four grandchildren, Bailey Hurst and husband, Cooper, Hailey Hibler and husband, Ransley, Jaxon Meadows, and Hayden Vernon; one adored great granddaughter, Fulton Hurst; two brothers, Ricky Vernon and wife, Cindy of Canadian and Wendell Vernon of Yukon, OK; and sister, Nelda Litton and husband, John of Bristol, TN.
Because of their exceptional and compassionate care of Verley, the family suggests memorials be to Gentiva Hospice, 3232 Hobbs Rd., Ste. A, Amarillo, TX 79109.
