Thelma Gean Fulton, 91, of Canyon, passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2021. Services will be at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at the First Methodist Church of Canyon with Charlie Keys officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. on Saturday prior to the service at Brooks Chapel in Canyon. Burial will be private.
Thelma Gean was born May 13, 1930 to Joe and Lillie Mercer of Silverton, Texas. She graduated from Silverton High School at age 16 where she was Valedictorian of her graduating class of 1946. She received a Bachelor of Music degree from West Texas State University, majoring in Voice Performance. She married H.R. Fulton, Jr. of Canyon, Texas in 1948. Thelma and H.R. continued to reside in Canyon where they led very active lives in the community.
Thelma was often singing for her church and community and teaching many students who continued on as professional singers. She taught voice at WTSU for 10 years as well as maintaining a private studio at home. She sang frequent solos at the First Methodist Church and attended the church choir from 1946 until she was 85 years of age. She sang at numerous weddings and funerals and many would remember her lovely annual "O Holy Night" on Christmas Eve.
She assisted her husband in the floral business, H.R.'s Flowers and Gifts, with weddings, open houses, and homecoming events. Thelma and H.R., avid opera lovers, were founding members of Amarillo Opera, along with Mila Beth Gibson, and Catherine and Merrill Winsett.
Thelma is survived by three children and spouses, Richard and Sandy Fulton, Jeanna and Patrick McIntyre, and Lauran and Bill Corson, along with two grandchildren Julie Corson and Alex Corson and his wife Deidra Slough.
