Dr. Ted H. Montgomery (Doc), 80, of Canyon, died peacefully after a long-fought battle with cancer, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, August, 10, 2021. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, August 13, 2021 at Living Water Christian Fellowship in Canyon with Rev. Dalton Mathis, pastor of Avenue D Baptist Church of Snyder, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, August 12, 2021 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon.
Ted was born on June 1, 1941, in Greeley, Colorado to R.C. and Mary Montgomery. He graduated from Belen High School in Belen, New Mexico in 1959, where he was an active member of Future Farmers of America and had a small flock of sheep, thus beginning his passion for agriculture.
He received a BS in Animal Science from Texas Tech University where he also met the love of his life, Lorita Shock. He then returned to New Mexico where received his Master's Degree in Animal Science from New Mexico State University. Lorita followed him there and after graduation, they were married on April 9, 1966 in Houston.
His first teaching job was at Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas. He then taught and ran the Meat Lab at Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Oklahoma, prior to pursuing his PhD in Meat Science at Texas Tech University. After receiving his doctorate degree, he was hired in 1975 to begin the Meat Science program at West Texas State University in Canyon. He taught and mentored thousands of students throughout his 30 years. While there, he began the Beef Carcass Research Center in 1992, conducting carcass data throughout the country and in many foreign countries. He retired from West Texas A&M University as a Professor Emeritus in 2005. Following his retirement, he selflessly continued humanitarian work in agriculture in many third world countries. His happiest times were spent with his wife, three children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Lucy Burt. Survivors include his wife, Lorita of the home; two daughters, Chandra Mathis of Canyon and Tanya Montgomery of Pomona, California; his son, Mike Montgomery of Pecos; one son-in-law, Dustin Mathis of Stamford; his grandchildren, Tanner Mathis of Lubbock, Dalton Mathis and wife, Kelsey of Snyder, Michaela Montgomery of Amarillo, Maleyah Moses of Pomona, California, Ashton Hazlewood and Meagan McDonough of Canyon, Brianna Hazelwood of Canyon, and Dawson Montgomery of Canyon; two great-grandchildren, Brazos Mathis and Swayde Mathis of Snyder; one sister Marcie Gittrich and husband Gene of Peoria, Illinois; sisters-in-law Diane Shock of Crosbyton and Marcille Long and husband, Don of Ozona; and several nieces and nephews.
