Sylvester 'Sid' Ricks

Sylvester Eugene "Sid" Ricks, 77, of Canyon, passed away peacefully at his home on January 1, 2025. The family will receive visitors Monday, January 6, 2025, from 5-7pm at Brooks Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at Brooks Funeral Chapel with Jim Childers officiating. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at Childress Cemetery.

Sid was born October 12, 1947, in Childress, Texas, the only child of James Edward and Velma Lee (Goodson) Ricks, who have preceded him in death. He was baptized in the Bible Baptist Church at age 12, and in 1966, graduated from Childress High School. Sid was a decorated war veteran, enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1968, where he served his country as a Sergeant during the Vietnam War until 1972. He then attended West Texas State University and graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy. For 34 years he was a soil conservationist around the state of Texas for the U.S. Department of Agriculture until his retirement.

Sid was very active in his community, beginning with chartering a Lion's Club in Levelland, Texas. He was a lifetime member of Girlstown USA, became a Mason with Patrick Lodge No. 359 in Franklin, Texas, and Commanded the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5681, as well as a Lion's Club member, in Canyon, Texas.

He enjoyed watching football and golf, playing board games, spending time with his family, and traveling. He toured 38 continental states, including Alaska, Hawaii, and the Great Lakes in Canada. He will be remembered for his meticulous planning, tall tales, and love for his country.

Survivors include his loving wife, Cheryl Hunter Ricks; a son, Jason James Ricks and wife, Nicole, and their children Kaitlynn, Kelton, and Kiegan of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; a daughter, Kristin Kamille Ross and husband Dan, and their children Margot and Charlize of New Braunfels, Texas; a stepson, Eric Hunter Forsyth and his wife, Maegan, and their children Reilly and Sean of Houston, Texas; and a stepdaughter, Desi Forsyth Hutcherson and her husband, Joshua, and their children Daniel and Nicholas, of Canyon, Texas.
