Susan Turney

November 28, 1938 — February 9, 2023

Susan Turney, 84, of Canyon, passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2023. Memorial services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at the First Baptist Church Ministry Center with Rev. Steve Olsen officiating.

Susan was born on November 28, 1938 in Oakland, California to George and Esther (Brown) Bland. She graduated from Sonoma Valley High School in 1956 and married Warren Turney, MD in Sonoma in 1959. He practiced medicine and Susan managed his business in the Sacramento area and then the Ft. Wayne, Indiana area for many years. Upon retirement, they moved to Tillamook, Oregon where their hearts for ministry led them to open a halfway house and become very involved in the Celebrate Recovery program. Susan always believed in second chances and was also involved in the prison ministry there, faithfully assisting young women in preparing for interviews. They remained in Tillamook until 2019, when Warren preceded her in death.

Susan then moved to Canyon. She was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Canyon and once again, became involved in the Celebrate Recovery program through the church. She was also very active in the American Cancer Society and enjoyed volunteering with Partners in Palo Duro Canyon. Susan lived for Jesus and was devoted to sharing her faith, especially with those struggling with dependency. She dearly loved her family. She adored her children and grandchildren and treasured her time with them.

Susan was also preceded in death by a daughter, Athena Wonderly. Survivors include five children, Matthew Turney and wife, Linda of Canyon, Brian Turney of Tillamook, OR, Carla Maclay and husband, Kurt of Meadow Vista, CA, Mark Turney and wife, Edith of Ft. Wayne, IN, and Darren Turney and wife, Julie of Ft. Wayne, IN; fifteen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and her sister, Corky Hall of Boyd, TX.

The family suggests memorials be to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 81795, Austin, TX 78708 or to the First Baptist Church, 1717 4th Avenue, Canyon, TX 79015.
