Sue Williams Waide, 88, of Canyon, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025. Graveside service will be at 9:00 A.M. on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Dreamland Cemetery followed by a Memorial service at 10:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church of Canyon with Gene Jones officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 6:30 on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Brooks Chapel.
Sue Williams Waide was born January 2, 1937, in Shattuck, Oklahoma to Chester H. and Maibelle Waggoner Williams of Perryton, Texas. She grew up in Perryton where she attended grades 1-12, graduating in 1955. She was active in G.A.s at First Baptist Church in Perryton and was a church pianist for churches in Spearman and Perryton. She was a Girl Scout and was involved in the school newspaper, annual, band, and Extemporaneous Speaking. Sue went on to attend Hardin-Simmons University, the University of Texas, and West Texas A&M University, earning a degree in Elementary Education.
She married Ronnie Waide on August 18, 1957, in Perryton, Tx. They lived for a time on the family farm in Ochiltree County before moving to the town of Perryton. They later moved to College Station, Texas where they lived for 4 years. In 1968 she and Ronnie moved to Canyon, Texas where they lived for 58 years. Sue taught kindergarten at First Baptist Church and worked at the University Bookstore while Ronnie was a professor at West Texas A&M. They have been members of First Baptist Church in Canyon for 57 years.
Sue and Ronnie loved to travel, spending many summers in Alaska and the west coast of the U.S. They also toured the U.S. in their camper, spending time in Canada, on the east coast and attending Special Olympics golf competitions across the country for their grandson, Carson.
Sue is survived by her husband, Ronnie L. Waide, two daughters, Rhonda Artho & husband Mike Artho, and Rebecca Leggitt and husband Jeff Leggitt. Daughter Robin Ayres preceded her mother in death in 2023. She is also survived by grandchildren Carson Leggitt, James Ayres, Kirby Ayres and wife Alex, Nathan Ayres and wife Caitlin, Rachel Ickert and husband Andrew, Wendy Calvo and husband R.J., and 8 much-loved great-grandchildren.
