Sharon Lou Evans Byrd

April 24, 1943 — October 18, 2025

Sharon Lou Evans Byrd, 82, of Canyon, Texas passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on October 18, 2025. Services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at First Methodist Church of Canyon with Rev. Matt Wolfington and Rev. Rick Enns officiating. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday at Claude Cemetery in Claude, Texas. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 21, 2025 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon. Sharon was born on April 24, 1943 in Canyon. She attended several schools while growing up which embedded her advice to her children and grandchildren – 'always be nice to the new kid'. She graduated from Claude High School in 1961 and then completed business courses at the Business College in Amarillo. On March 23, 1962, Sharon married the love of her life, Bob Byrd, and they lived in Claude for 40 years before moving to Canyon in 2004 upon his retirement. They spent 57 wonderful, happy years together. Sharon was a loving wife, mom, and Maw. She was completely dedicated to her family in all she did, whether it be cooking chicken fried steak and taking it to the harvest crew or driving to countless sporting and 4-H events with anything anyone might need because she was always prepared. Being a Maw was one of her greatest joys, and she spent countless hours making cookies with her grandkids, playing games and doing pretty much anything they wanted to do! She had a knack for gardening and loved spending time in her backyard and watching all the beautiful birds that would seem to find her. Sharon was a friend to all who knew her. She had a huge heart and truly cared and always looked for ways to help those in need. She was also a member of the First Methodist Church in Canyon and the Pathfinders Sunday School Class. Aside from being a homemaker and taking amazing care of her family, Sharon was not afraid to try new things. She once took a cake decorating class and that turned into becoming Sharon's Cake Kitchen. Many birthday and wedding cakes were made over the years! She later took a floral arrangement class with some friends and that turned into opening her own gift shop, Sharon's Gifts. She instilled in her children that every day is a choice, so show up and do your best! Sharon was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bob Byrd and her parents, Helene and Afton Thornton. Survivors include her son, Steve Byrd of Claude; two daughters, Amy West of Canyon and Cindy Cummings and husband, Brett of Bushland; brother, Tommy Thornton and wife, Norma of Las Vegas, NM; five grandchildren, Austin Bradshaw of Red River, NM, Cambri Cummings of Plano, TX, Ella Cummings of Bushland, TX, Bryce Cummings and wife, Michelle of Amarillo, TX, and Brant Cummings and wife, Ashley of New Home, TX; four great-grandchildren, Barrett, Beckham, Asher, and Emery; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Faith City Mission, PO Box 870, Amarillo, TX 79105 or First Methodist Church, 1818 4th Avenue, Canyon, TX 79015.
