Ruth Ellen Walker, 85, of Amarillo, formally of Plainview, passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2026. Services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at Plainview Memorial Park with Aaron Saavedra officiating.
Ruth Ellen Walker was born on October 8, 1941, to Amaline and Isaac Burnett in Arkansas.
Ruth earned a master’s degree in education and obtained her R.N. license in 1961. Throughout her career, she moved between nursing and teaching, bringing the same caring, loving spirit to both.
On November 9, 1962, she married Garland ‘Buddy’ Walker in Abilene, Texas. As a military spouse, Ruth moved frequently, yet she created a joyful home in every new community. Buddy was also a preacher, and Ruth embraced and loved her role as a preacher’s wife. Her faith and love for the Lord remained central throughout the 63 wonderful years she and Buddy shared together. Over the years, Buddy and Ruth belonged to several churches. After retiring, they became active, devoted members of College Heights Baptist Church in Plainview before moving to Amarillo, Texas.
Ruth loved animals, especially dogs, which always brought a playful smile to her face. She also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, a good game of dominoes, and reading in her spare time.
Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, and beloved son-in-law Larry Britten.
She is survived by her loving husband, Buddy Walker; her daughters, Brenda Thompson, and Donna Britten; grandsons, Drake Carrasco, and Trevor Carrasco and wife, Mikayla; as well as two great grandchildren, Kynslee and Asher.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Lisa Knaff and her wonderful staff with Abundantly Blessed. Also, the caring staff of BSA Hospice of the Southwest. Thank you to Pam, Lindsey, Jennica and Brinda. And a very special thank you to D’dee Grove.
The family suggests memorials be made to BSA Hospice of the Southwest, 5211 SW 9th Suite 100, Amarillo, TX 79106.
