Roy Lyles

December 31, 1969 — February 26, 2011

Services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at the First Baptist Church of Canyon, Texas, with Rev. Billy D. Nickell, pastor of Amarillo"s First Family Church, officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday, February 28, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel in Canyon, Texas. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery, Canyon, Texas. Mr. Lyles was one of eleven children born to Matthew W. and Minnie Payne Lyles in Quitaque, Texas on July 22, 1921. He attended schools in Lockney, Texas where he graduated from high school. He enrolled at West Texas College the following year. His college education was interrupted by service in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he was stationed at a B17 base in London, England during World War II. At the end of the war, he returned to West Texas College to acquire bachelors and masters degrees. He worked as an insurance adjuster for many years, retiring from GAB Insurance in 1983. He was a builder and built homes in Canyon, Texas and Red River, NM. He lived in Red River many years where he was an avid skier and taught most of his family to ski. He was a long time Baptist and was a member of First Baptist Church of Canyon. He was a member of the Canyon City Masonic Lodge 730 for fifty-six years. Mr. Lyles was a Boy Scout leader for many years and was very proud of the young men with whom he was associated. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and six sisters. He is survived by his wife, Betty L. Lyles, of the home; two sons, Randy Lyles and Ricky Lyles and wife, Loretta, of Red River, NM; a daughter, Staci Ann Bailey and husband, Guy, of Abilene, Texas; two stepsons, Brian Gaines and wife, Ann, of Helotes, Texas, and Brad Gaines, of Austin, Texas; grandsons, Nathan Lyles and Bear Bailey; granddaughters, Katie McDowell and husband, Beau, Lacy Lyles, Brooke Bailey, and Lindsey Lyles; step grandchildren, Austin Gaines, Brett Gaines, and Addison Gaines; great grandchildren, Kamryn McDowell and Kayce McDowell; and two sisters, Tangy Hargis and Helen Lyles, both of Amarillo.
