Roberta King

November 14, 1929 — July 4, 2018

Roberta Rae King, 88, of Canyon, TX passed away on July 4, 2018. Services will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 6, 2018 at Brooks Chapel with Rev. Kevin Deckard, Associate Pastor Polk Street United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Higgins Cemetery. Roberta was born November 14, 1929 in San Bernardino, CA to Fern (Miller) Coulson and Edwin Coulson. The family moved to Guymon, OK while she was still a baby and then to Gentry, AR where she started to school. Roberta was in Guymon for the sixth grade and then attended Higgins, TX where she graduated as salutatorian at age 16. Roberta married her high school sweetheart, Ernest Wayne King, December 14, 1947 in Springdale, AR. They raised their three children in a farm home two miles northwest of Higgins. As a stay at home mother, she found time to take part in church, 4H and school activities. She was also active in the Lipscomb County Home Demonstration Club and the Docilis Club. As a Docilis member, she helped establish and promote the Higgins Community Park. She served as Sunday School teacher in the Higgins United Methodist Church and served many years as Outreach Mission Chairperson. Roberta worked as receptionist/book keeper for three and a half years in the office of Dr. Morris in Canadian, TX.  Ernest and Roberta moved into a home in Higgins after their children were grown. They enjoyed living close to neighbors for 17 years before returning to the farm home. In 1993 Roberta was surprised to receive the Lipscomb County Conservation Homemaker Award. After 12 years back at the farm home, they started a new way of life at the Palo Duro Retirement Village in Canyon, TX, where they were close to family. They found the village a good place to live after over 60 years in Higgins. Survivors include her husband, one daughter, Mary Fern and husband Jim Slavin of Miami, TX and two sons, Ray and wife Vickie and Joe and wife Jane of Canyon. Six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and a brother, Mahlon Coulson and wife Nell of Lubbock. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to one of the following charities: Higgins United Methodist Church, 220 N Main, Higgins, TX 79046 First United Methodist Church Canyon, 1818 4th Ave, Canyon, TX 79015 Faith City Mission, 401 SE 2nd Ave, Amarillo, TX 79101
