Kathryn, her mother, passed away when Jeannie was just five years old. Her father, Reinhart, passed away just five years later. She then moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Grace and Art Steinke. In 1947, she moved to Amarillo to attend the Northwest Texas Hospital School of Nursing. Shortly thereafter, while participating in Walther League at Trinity Lutheran Church in Amarillo, Jeannie met Herbert F. Kuhlman. At that same church, they married on June 5, 1949. They settled in Randall County where they farmed and ranched together for fifty-three years, until Herbert passed away in 2003. In addition to her dedication to her family and to their farm and ranch, she gave of herself abundantly to outside organizations. She served on the Board of Directors of the Good Samaritan Lutheran Home, in Cypress, TX for over 15 years. Serving the needs of mentally challenged adults, the Good Samaritan Home was very close to Jeannie's heart and she was proud to take three of her grandchildren to the home in the late 80's for an impactful visit. After surviving three cancer diagnoses, Jeannie felt called to give of her time and talents to the American Cancer Society. She served this organization for over thirty years in multiple capacities, as District Crusade Chairman, President of the Randall County Unit, and District Lay Director. In 1995, she was awarded the prestigious American Cancer Society Courage Award and in 2000 she was presented with the highest honor given to an American Cancer Society volunteer, when she received the Distinguished Member of the Society Award. Along with Herbert, she also served her surrounding Agriculture community. In doing so, she was recognized with the Outstanding Conservation Homemaker Award in 1993 and she and Herbert were awarded the Texas 4-H Citation for Outstanding Service in 2005. Jeannie was also a lifelong member of the service sorority, Beta Sigma Phi. In 2004, Jeannie moved to a lovely retirement community in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she enjoyed sunshine and new friendships. Jeannie transitioned to Albuquerque, NM in August of 2014, where she resided until she passed peacefully, surrounded by family, on August 31st. She was preceded in death by her parents, Reinhart and Kathryn Steinke, her husband, Herbert F. Kuhlman, a daughter, Deborah Jean Kuhlman, a grandson, C.M.
