Phillip D. Graybeal

May 23, 1935 — May 4, 2024

Phil Graybeal's 88 year old spirit, which will be united with an immortal body at the resurrection, left his mortal body on May 4, 2024. Phil was born in a sod house near Pendennis in Lane County, Kansas, on May 23, 1935, to Eva Lillian (King) and Fredrik Ralph Graybeal. Shortly after Phil's birth his parents moved to Southern California and in 1940 they moved back to Kansas where his father farmed in Coffey County. During Phil's late elementary school years they moved to Waverly, Kansas, and he graduated from high school there in 1953. That year his parents moved to Manhattan, Kansas, and Phil attended Kansas State Agricultural College.

In 1955 Phil was inducted into the U. S. Army, underwent basic training at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, and attended telegraphy and teletype school at Camp Gordon, Georgia. Late that year he was transferred to Camp Bussac near Bordeaux, France. When released from the Army Phil returned to Kansas and served on the Manhattan Police Department from 1958 until 1964 when he was hired by Kansas Farm Bureau Insurance Company as a property claims examiner. In 1965 he and his wife, Lynda, whom he had married in 1961, were transferred to Wichita, Kansas, where he continued working for Kansas Farm Bureau, this time as a property claims adjuster. In 1994 Phil retired and they moved to the Denver, Colorado, area where he worked for insurance companies and a restoration business. They moved to Canyon, Texas, in 2004 when Lynda retired.

Phil served as a deacon, committee chair, elder, and committee member in churches, on the Sedgwick County Extension Board in Kansas, was a leader in a 4-H club, and coached youth softball and baseball teams. Over the years he had several hobbies including photography, ham radio, computers, and radio controlled airplanes. At his death he was a member of the Crusaders Class at First Methodist Church. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, Dwight, and sister, Patricia Hinten. He is survived by his wife Lynda; a daughter and her husband, Teresa K. and Richard A. Howard, and their children, Richard A., Jr. and wife Taylor, and Arabella Rene Howard; a son and his wife, Lyle S. and Felicia M. SmithGraybeal, sisters Betty Henning, and nieces and nephews.

The family requests that Phil be remembered by sending donations to the Canyon Senior Citizen's Center, 1719 5th Ave, Canyon TX 79015.
