Paul Lindsey

December 31, 1969 — January 1, 2014

Services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, January 6, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Canyon with Rev. Steve Olsen, pastor, and Rev. Jim Hancock officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at Brooks Chapel. On December 28, 1976, Paul Eldon Lindsey retired from public service. He retired from this world on January 1, 2014. His entry into the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ has been looked forward to by Paul for the past few years. Had he lived until January 14, 2014, he would have been 101 years old. Paul was born January 14, 1913 in Newport, TX to Leonard and Lida Rodella Lindsey. In 1930 his family moved to Canyon. He worked as a truck driver for his Dad and then as a mechanic for Western Sand & Gravel, Imperial Chevrolet and Hawks Motors. He bought into Hawks Motors in 1939, and in 1942, he bought out the partnership and changed the car dealership to Lindsey Motor Company. He sold Ford cars and trucks. He also began the Massey-Ferguson dealership as Lindsey Farm Implement Co. Paul was also farming and raising livestock during this time. He sold both companies before 1960 to continue his farm and ranch business. He was married to Essie Rampy for a number of years, then was married to Katherine Finley from 1948 until her death in 1995. He is also preceded in death by two daughters, Bertha Smotherman and Mary Ann Lindsey. Paul, a former Mayor of Canyon and a man who served on almost every civic board in Canyon and Randall County is reaping his rewards. He is a member of the First Baptist Church in Canyon. His service with the Canyon Volunteer Fire Department spanned 32 years. As a tribute to his leadership, the department?s training field was dedicated as the Lindsey Fireman Training Field. In 1968, he was named Canyon Citizen of the Year. In 1969 he was named Canyon Citizen of the Decade, and in 1977, was named Randall County Top Hand and Area Wide Top Hand. With typical modesty, Lindsey once said, ?I?ve had more recognition than I deserve. I have been the beneficiary of working with the city and county. I?ve gained more than I?ve given.? Survivors include his son, James Paul Lindsey and wife, J?Vne; three grandchildren, James Eldon Lindsey, Jerry Ray Lindsey, and Deborah McCowan; three great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Childer?s Place, 6600 Killgore Dr., Amarillo, TX 79106 or Hospice Care of the Southwest, 1301 S. Coulter, Suite 404, Amarillo, TX 79106.
