Services will be 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, May 18, 2006 at the First Baptist Church in Canyon with Dr. David Lowrie, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Dreamland Cemetery. Oneta Fern Newton was born on January 16, 1922 in Russell, Oklahoma to Thomas Ira and Louisa Maude Greene Hollis. She graduated with honors from Muleshoe Highschool and attended West Texas State College where she received her Masters Degree. Fern married J.C. Newton in Canyon, Texas on September 2, 1939. She taught at Emmerson Elementary for 28 years in Amarillo. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Senior Choir, Senior Adult, and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Fern was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Quilters of the First Baptist Church and the Hospital Auxiliary at Palo Duro Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Newton in 1992, her daughter, Nita Delorse Renner in 1976, three brothers and three sisters. Survivors include; her son, Jimmy W. and wife, Jeanette Newton of Amarillo; grandson Jaymes "Jay" and wife, Vietta Newton of Vega; four grandaughters, Jeanita Lee Newton Skipper and husband, Kyle of Amarillo, Joy Lynn Newton of Amarillo, Jan Arlane Newton of Amarillo, and Jenny Estelle Newton of Amarillo; three great grandchildren, Ernest Newton, Heather Newton, and Kase Skipper; and one sister, Ira Watson of New Orleans, LA.
