Norma Ruth Dement peacefully passed away on March 11, 2025 with her family nearby. Her life will be celebrated at Southwest Church of Christ in Amarillo, Texas at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, March 17, 2025. Graveside services will follow at West Park Cemetery in Hereford at 2:00 P.M.
Norma was born on September 20, 1936, to Oliver and Annie May Cummings in Wheeler, Texas. She was a graduate of Hereford High School. She married the love of her life, Raymond Dement, on August 24, 1956. Together, they built a family of five and a warm and loving home, where kindness and hospitality flourished. Norma was deeply involved in her faith and the communities of every church she attended including Hereford, Roswell and Amarillo. For the past 38 years she devoted herself to the Southwest Church of Christ where she enjoyed her involvement with Sunday Morning Bible Class, Monday night Bible Study, Merry Widows, Monthly Bunco and The Red Hat Society.
She had a great passion for the Texas Rangers, but her greatest joy was found in her family. More than anything, she loved being a "Nana" to her grandkids. She loved going to their activities and just being their Nana. As they grew older, she was a safe and supportive presence, always ready to listen and offer guidance. She was a fabulous cook and is known among the family for her peach cobbler, brownies, potato salad and banana pudding...
Norma was preceded in death by her husband, parents and seven siblings; Viola, Ruby, Floyd, Harley, Bessie, Oliver Ray, Jessie Lee and her son in law Rick Downs
She is survived by her sister, Lois Lomenick; three children, Greg Dement, Judith McNeill and her husband Dudley, Randal Dement and his wife Sherri. Norma also leaves behind cherished grandchildren, Zac and wife Kaitlin, Luke and wife Mary, Sydney and husband Ben, Slade and wife Brooke, Skylar and husband Coy, Chayce and wife Kenzie, Calvin, and Max as well as four great-grandchildren, Mac, Beck, Hendrick and Davis; a sister in law, Wanda Dement and many cousins, nieces and nephews and her dog, Axel.
The family kindly suggests memorial contributions be made to her favorite charity, The High Plains Children's Home, PO Box 7448, Amarillo, Texas, 79114.
