Memorial services will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Brooks Chapel with Rev. Rick Enns, First United Methodist Church. Mike was born in Amarillo, Texas on December 9, 1952 to Clyde and Margaret Baker. As a young man with his family, he lived in Washington, Oregon, California, Greece, Venezuela and Missouri. He graduated from high school in 1971 in Sikeston, Missouri, and was then drated into military service during the last years of the Vietnam war. He served his military years in the Navy submarine division on the USS Salmon. In July, 1978, he and Marcia Herrick were married in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. To this union was born a daughter, Renae Dawn. In 1985, Mike graduated from West Texas State University in Canyon. He then worked for the Texas Commission Environmental Quality (TCEQ) in the Amarillo office for 27 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde, and grandparents, Sam and Della Baker, and Emanuel and Martha Appel. Survivors include his daughter, Renae Baker, of Atlanta, Georgia; mother, Margaret Baker, of Canyon; sister, Marti McDowell and husband, Doug, of Iron Mountain, Michigan; three nephews, Michael, Kevin and Christopher McDowell; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. One of Mike's passions was his love for animals. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to the Amarillo Animal Rescue, 12500 FM 1541, Amarillo, TX 79118.
