Melvin 'Mel' Clayton

Melvin ‘Mel’ Clayton, 80, of Canyon, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2026. Graveside services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Dreamland Cemetery with David Bagwell officiating.

Mel was born on August 30, 1946, in Grayson County to Gene L. and Lorene (Magers) Clayton. A 1964 graduate of Kress High School, he earned a bachelor’s degree from West Texas State University. He worked as a dedicated sales representative for UARCO Business Forms for 40 years and later for Graham Data Supplies.

Mel was active in Boy Scout Troop 31 and served for a time as Scoutmaster. An avid WT Buffs fan, he traveled to games to support the Lady Buffs basketball team and received the Outstanding Spectator Award. He belonged to the Canyon Rotary Club and strongly supported “Save Our Museum.” Though private by nature, he enjoyed Facebook, especially All Things Canyon. He also enjoyed professional rodeo and followed the NFR.

Mel is preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his son, Gene Clayton of Amarillo; his daughter, Amy Clayton of Canyon; sister, Jeanne Sternenberg of Amarillo; three grandchildren, Breely Medlin, Stetson Kirkpatrick, and Amy Clayton; and four great grandchildren.
