Maudie Laycock

August 27, 1915 — March 13, 2018

Maudie Elizabeth Sophia Mallow Laycock, 102, formerly of Canyon, died March 13, 2018.  A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 16, 2018, at 11:00 AM at Brooks Chapel with Rev. Gene Jones, Associate Pastor First Baptist Church Canyon, officiating.  Burial will be at 10:00 AM at Dreamland Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 15 from 5:30 to 7:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel.  Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon. Maudie was born August 27, 1915 in Blanket, Texas to William Claude Mallow and Clara Christine Scheu.  She married Huelyn Weldon Laycock in 1932 in Sayre, Oklahoma.  She served her church in many capacities and was active in many organizations in her community.  She taught school in Gray County, worked at Pioneer Natural Gas in Pampa, First State Bank in White Deer, First National Bank in Canyon, and was Director of Public Services at West Texas State A&M University.  She served as president of Council of PTAs in Pampa, Twentieth Century Culture Club in Pampa, Vanada Blanca Study Club in White Deer, Sue Hite Study Club in Canyon, and collegiate advisor for Zeta Tau Alpha.  She was a member of the Canyon Retired Teachers Association, Dreamland Cemetery Board, Panhandle Plains Historical Museum Auxiliary, and Wheels-a-Go Go Trailer Club.  She was named "Woman of the Year" in Pampa for her contributions to church, home, and community. She was preceded in death by her husband, Huelyn; brothers J.D. Mallow, R.L. Mallow, and Elwood Mallow, Donnie Dow; and sister Lucille Ward.  She is survived by daughter Berdene Blair of Amarillo; son Brantley Laycock (Mary Lindra) of Spring; granddaughter Cynthia Courtney (Dale) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; grandsons Gary Byars (Debra) of Canyon, Mark Byars of Farmington, New Mexico, Dr. Stephen Laycock (Dr. Christine) of Conroe, Patrick Laycock (Dawnette) of Conroe, and Brian Laycock of Colorado Springs, Colorado; great-grandchildren Brandy Byars, Jason Laycock, Shailey Laycock and Clay Courtney (Polly); great-great granddaughter Elaine Courtney; and brother Hassen Dow of Hugo, Oklahoma.
