Mary Johnson

Mary O. Johnson, 93, of Canyon, passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2019. Services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 4 at Brooks Chapel. Burial will follow at Happy Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 3 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel. Mary was born on September 18, 1926 in Fisher County, TX to Edwin Pool and Katherine (Kate) Terry Neves. She married N.F. "Shorty" Johnson on April 20, 1946 in Cisco, TX. It was love at first sight for Shorty. He always called her "that little girl." He preceded her in death in 1995 after 49 years of marriage. They farmed in Swisher County from 1951 to 1974 and then moved to Amarillo. Mary then spent 15 years working as a clerk for Potter County where she filed marriage licenses. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Happy and the Panhandle Art Society. Mary enjoyed painting. She was also a talented seamstress. She made all her daughters' clothes. She loved spending time working in her flower beds. She was a good mother who was lovingly known as "Mema" by her family. She loved her grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and her many cherished friends. She was also preceded in death by her son, Royce Johnson and by three brothers, Tommy Jack, Edwin and Willie. Survivors include her two daughters, Sharon Johnson-Hicks and husband Randy, Carol Johnson Mitchell and husband David; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and five siblings, Roy, Earl Lynn, Clara Ann Jennings, Rosalie Harrison, and Bonnie Powell. The family suggests that memorials be made to Palo Duro Retirement Village, 9 Hospital Dr, Canyon, TX 79015 or to your favorite charity.
