Marjorie Shaw

December 5, 1939 — November 20, 2015

A service celebrating Sam's life will be held at 3 pm on December 5, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church in Canyon, Texas with Rev. Rick Enns, pastor, officiating. Sam was born December 5, 1939 in Aurora, Illinois to Ralph B. and Gladys (Wheeler) Schlapp of Oswego, Illinois. A 4th generation farm girl, Sam was actively involved in band, choir, all sports, 4-H and FHA. She attended the University of Illinois and married Jesse F. Shaw on January 7, 1962. Together, they spent their careers successfully operating and building their own insurance agencies throughout the Midwest. Sam led a life of accomplishment; wife, mother, home-maker, business-woman, community volunteer, she committed herself to serving others. She loved enriching the communities she was a part of and participated in numerous community service activities including the Lioness Club, teaching Sunday school as well as after school youth ministry programs. An accomplished musician, Sam played the piano and organ for her church, sang in the church choir and gospel music groups. Throughout her life she held a passion for all things outdoors and had a particular fondness for rose gardening and bird watching. Sam moved to Canyon, Texas in 2003, and began work for Edmond, Deaton & Stephens Insurance, became a member of the First United Methodist Church of Canyon and later retired from Panhandle Plains Student Loan Center. Her family recalls that one of the most memorable qualities of Sam is how much she enjoyed sharing a good conversation and a hearty laugh with friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother Ronald L. Schlapp. She is survived by her son, Mark, his wife Martha, and their two children Chandler and Colton of Canyon, TX; and her daughter Brooke Wiewel and her husband Doug Wiewel of Palatine, IL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests all memorials to Sam be made to the Botanical Gardens of Amarillo, Texas, where a placard will be placed in her honor.
