Marilyn Rakes

Services will be at 4:00 P.M. on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Canyon with Rev. Gene Jones, associate pastor, officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at Belvieu Cemetery in Rotan, Texas. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Monday, February 4, 2013 at Brooks Chapel. Marilyn Rakes was born on September 7, 1950 in Rotan, Texas to Judson and Bertha Thompson. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education and her Masters degree in Education from West Texas State University. She taught for 39 years, starting in Dimmitt, Hearn, and the last 26 years at Canyon Jr. High School. She married Larry Wayne Rakes on December 21, 1970. He preceded her in death on August 17, 2010. Marilyn was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canyon. She enjoyed camping, sporting events, and her Thursday night pinochle group. She also loved reading to her grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters, Joanna Armstrong and husband, Jon, of Bushland, and Rachel Corley and husband, Jason, of Wilson; a sister, Janice Spinks and husband, Louie, of Ransom Canyon; and five grandchildren, Jaxson, Ryan, and Drew Armstrong, and Dylan and Quinn Corley. The family requests memorials be to Carenet Pregnancy Center, 1318 5th Avenue, Canyon, TX 79015.
