Maldean Houston

Maldean Marie Houston, 83 of Stratford, Texas passed away on Monday, April 18, 2022. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at the First Assembly of God church in Stratford, Texas with Pastors Kevin and Darla Anderson, officiating. Interment will follow at the Stratford Cemetery under the direction of Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon, Texas.

Dean (as she was known), was born on September 10, 1938, in Spade, Texas to J.L. and Mary (Young) Stowers. She grew up on a cotton farm in that area, later moving with her family to Friona as a young woman. This is where she met her husband, H.G. Houston. The couple had 3 children, Debra, Kent, Gina, (Houston).

Dean was a God loving woman gifted with many talents and abilities. She was a wonderful cook, making sumptuous meals, cakes, pies and other goodies. She had exceptional sewing skills including beautiful artistic quilts. She owned and operated a lovely little salon as a licensed hairdresser for several years before establishing the top-rated registered child care facility, "Dean's Playschool" in Amarillo, Texas. She moved with her family again to Iowa where she owned and operated a popular restaurant called The Madison House before returning to Texas in later years where she remained until her passing.

Dean was preceded in death by her son, Eddie Kent Houston of Iowa.

Dean is survived by her daughters, Debra Button of Omaha, Nebraska and Gina Carson of Clearwater Beach, Florida; grandsons, Jon Raney and wife Karla of Cumberland, Iowa, Josh Houston and wife, Kim of Nevada, Iowa, and Levi Houston and wife Lindsey of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one granddaughter, Karly Rose Thurmond of Omaha, Nebraska; great grandchildren, Allison Houston, Colton Houston, Jacob Houston, Charlie Grace Houston, Kaleb Hudson, Cheyenne Raney, Samuel Raney, Calvin Taylor, Catalaya Taylor, (and countless foster children Dean raised).

She is also survived by her three sisters, Ineta Chesher and her husband, Jimmy of Stratford, Texas, Darlene Dickey of Weatherford, Texas, Arlene Brodhead of Springtown, Texas, and a host of nieces and nephews who treasured her as "Aunt Mal".

The family suggests with gratitude that memorials be made to First Assembly of God church in Stratford, Texas, PO Box 506, Stratford, Texas 79084.
