Luella Mccarter

Luella McCarter, 90, of Canyon, passed away on Monday, August 19, 2024. Services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at the First Baptist Church of Canyon with Gene Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Dreamland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. on Friday, August 23, 2024 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors.

Luella was born on June 6, 1934 in Floydada to Felix and Lottie Faye (Maxey) Irwin. She graduated from Floydada High School and moved to Canyon in 1951 to obtain her Bachelor of Education degree from West Texas State. She taught at Oak Dale Elementary School in Amarillo for 30 years, leaving a significant and lasting impact on her students.

Luella married Wayne Roy McCarter on August 8, 1954 in Clovis, NM, and they were married for 34 years before he preceded her in death on November 13, 1988. On July 8, 2000, she married Bryce Slack, Jr., and he preceded her in death on August 2, 2009.

Luella was a longtime faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Canyon where she started and was very active in the FBC Quilting Ministry. She was also a member of Texas State Teachers Association for many years.

Luella was an incredibly inspiring and godly woman, leading many to seek her godly wisdom. She ministered to women of all ages who would come to her for guidance, and she was known and loved for sharing the straightforward truth of the Gospel. She had a devout faith and a generous and giving spirit, donating to any charity that needed help. She will always be remembered for her worshipper's heart, and those that loved her knew that her eyes were always fixed on Heaven. Luella also loved sewing and gardening and was an avid card player, relishing the competition.

Luella is also preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy McCarter in 1966, her son, Micky McCarter in 2015, her grandson Brad McCarter in 1996, one sister and five brothers.

Survivors include her son, Ricky McCarter and wife, Holly; her daughter, Nikki Lorenc and husband, Steve; daughter-in-love, Patsy McCarter; eight grandchildren, Melissa, Emily, Britt, Riki, James, Kenny, Julie, and Jennifer; sixteen great grandchildren; a brother, Herbert Irwin and wife, Sue; three sisters-in-law, Patricia McCarter, Audeen Irwin, and Jane Irwin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials be to the First Baptist Church Quilting Ministry, 1717 4th Avenue, Canyon, TX 79015.
