Memorial services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, June 5, 2017 at the First Christian Church with Rev. Mark Weathers, pastor, officiating. Louis G. Hinders, 90 years of age, of Canyon passed on May 28, 2017. He was the eldest child of Louis Ben and Amanette Garvin Hinders born on February 28, 1927 as Garvin Louis Hinders in Memphis, Texas. He grew up on the farm with his brothers, Edward and Raymond, and sister, Laverne. He attended school in Canyon and graduated from West Texas State University. Louis served in the army from 1945-1947 as a Company Commander for the 24th Infantry Regiment, Buffalo Soldiers. Louis married his high school sweetheart, (Mary) Carolyn Black on September 27, 1947. Through 68 years of marriage, they raised four children and were blessed with four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Louis and Carolyn worked side by side to build the Hinders Family Dairy. Through these ties with the dairy industry, Louis helped to establish six different Dairy Coops throughout the United States and served as one of the original members of the National Dairy Council. Valuing the power of a coop, beginning in 1984, Louis worked with members of the Canyon community to develop the Palo Duro Retirement Village. It was here that he loved to take his great-grandchildren fishing. Louis was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn, his sister, Laverne, and brother, Raymond, and his grandson, Chris. Louis is survived by his children, Edward Hinders, Mike Hinders and wife, Donna, Sharon Hinders, and David Hinders and wife, Tami; three grandchildren, Gail Smith and husband, Bradley, Bert Hinders and wife, Mindy, and Calli Farmer and husband, Danny; five great-grandchildren, Hollie, Dustin, Taylor, Eli, and Audrey; a brother, Edward Hinders and wife, Danna;, and sister-in-law, Sarah Beth. The family suggests memorials be sent to First Christian Church, 2011 4th Avenue, Canyon, TX 79015 or to the WTAMU Foundation for the Louis & Carolyn Hinders Endowed Scholarship, PO Box 60766, Canyon, TX 79016.
