Lela was born on August 11, 1939 in Canyon to Alvin Glen 'A.G.' and Opal (Findley) Turner. She grew up with a love of music and played the piano for praise and worship at her father's church, Bethel Assembly in Amarillo for many years. Lela's sister, Rene introduced her to Monte Alvin Chandler and they began singing on the radio in Plainview. She and Monte married in Amarillo on November 20, 1955 and they continued singing with Rene and her husband, Troy on the radio. Through the years, Lela and Monte delighted in family music sessions and they sang in numerous jamborees in the area.
Lela loved the Lord and always had her Bible with her. She and her friend, Wanda, were often known to find an open window at her father's church to gain entrance and spend hours in Bible study. Lela was never afraid to jump in and help with her husband's concrete business in any area she was needed, never minding getting her hands dirty. She enjoyed fishing with Monte and had an immense love for her family, especially her grandchildren. She was an amazing homemaker and will be affectionately remembered by her family for her wonderful cooking.
Lela is preceded in death by her husband, Monte, on November 11, 2013. She is also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Laverne 'Tootsie' Turner and Kay Arney, and a brother, Rev. Harold Turner.
Survivors include three sons, Monte Darrell Chandler and wife, Gwen, Terry Allen Chandler and wife, Lesa, and Myrron Kelly Chandler; eight grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and three sisters, Rene Morris, Frances Messer Walrath and husband, Walter, and Shirley Austin Lyle.
