Memorial services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, August 20, 2010 at Brooks Chapel, with Rev. Gene Jones, associate pastor of First Baptist Church of Canyon, officiating. Larry Rakes was born on August 29, 1951 in Bentonville, Arkansas to Clarence and Ruby Stiles Rakes. He grew up in Dumas and graduated from Dumas High School. He attended West Texas State University where he met Marilyn Thompson. They married on December 21, 1970 in Rotan. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and four wheeling in his Jeep in Colorado. He also enjoyed playing with his grandsons who called him Poppi. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canyon. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Rakes, of the home; two daughters, Joanna Armstrong and husband, Jon, of Bushland, and Rachel Corley and husband, Jason, of Slaton; his parents, Clarence and Ruby Rakes, of Dumas; a sister, Arlene Ritchey and husband, Ronnie, of Taylor, TX; sister-in-law, Janice Spinks and husband, Louie, of Ransom Canyon; four grandchildren, Jaxson, Ryan, and Drew Armstrong, and Dylan Corley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
