Ken Maynard, 81, of Canyon, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2022.
Timber! Now, I know I'm not using that in the correct context, but I feel it needs to be something big like that. Perhaps GERONIMO is a better fit seeing as Ken was a Paratrooper with the famed 101st Screaming Eagles. He has now fulfilled his Rendezvous with Destiny, his final jump. From little boy adventures and daring do with a flagpole, jumping from planes in flight, seasonally helping out his much more famous brother, Kris Kringle, sneaking around as The Phantom or even cavorting about with the Hairy Moon Monster he had a story for it all and we'll remember them, thus him.
Not many houses in Canyon he hadn't touched, so for many of you he's there, still with you in a tiny way. Go stare at your cabinets or rub your hands across the mud work and paint, it's there, the touch of the master's hand.
Ken was born June 17, 1940, he grew up in the bustling town of Darrouzett, Texas. Graduated from high school in 1958 and after incredible adventures at York College he joined the service in the 2/502 parachute infantry 101st Airborne, where he made life-long friends and jumped from multiple aircraft as a forward observer and chart operator for his mortar section. In 1963, after roughly 2 minutes of hard thought, he decided the Army would be fine without him and he chose to separate rather than re-enlist. He made his way to his forever home in Canyon where he finished college at W.T., began a career, and raised a family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Basil Jr. and Lugene Duke; his wife, Marilyn Maynard; brothers, Wayne Maynard and Larry Cross; and numerous dogs and other critters his children brought home that he inevitably bonded with.
He is survived by his children, Wendy and Louis Shaheen, and Scott and Shannon Maynard; brothers, Dana Duke, Daryl and wife Delfia Duke, and Steve and wife Suellen Cross; sisters, Delia Pletcher, Carolyn and husband Henry Altmiller, Delores Cross, and Karen Kimbrow; grandson, Cadence Maynard; and granddaughters, Megan Price, Serena Rincon, and Ariana Rincon. He also leaves behind three great grandbabies; many wonderful nieces and nephews; and too many "adopted" kids and friends to write in here. Last but not least is his favorite, Mr. Doodles, with whom many adventures were had.
His stories will be missed; his heart, humor, and generosity will be held in our own hearts. Green light, Dad...GO!
