Julia Mae Brooks

Julia Mae Brooks, 89, of Canyon, passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2022. Memorial services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at the First Assembly of God Church in Canyon with Rev. Jan Middaugh and Rev. Billy D. Nickell officiating. Private family burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery.

Julia was born on January 17, 1933 in Amarillo to William Calvin and Hazel Louise (Smith) James. She married Bruce Brooks on August 20, 1948 at the First Assembly of God Church on Amarillo Boulevard. Julia worked hand in hand with Bruce for many years, keeping the books as they owned Brooks Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning in Dumas before moving their business to Ulysses, Kansas. In 1979, they moved to Canyon, and she worked for High Plains Epilepsy for nine years before they purchased ACME Plumbing in Amarillo in 1988.

Julia was deeply devoted to her family and her church, wanting her family to be with her in church every time the doors opened. She and Bruce were members of Bethel Assembly of God Church in Dumas, First Assembly of God Church in Ulysses, First Assembly of God Church in Amarillo, and lastly, First Assembly of God Church in Canyon. She kept the books for most of them and rarely missed a service playing the organ. Julia wanted her music to always be for the glory of God. She also taught Sunday School and was very active in the Women's Ministries program in each church.

Julia taught piano and organ for many years in Dumas. She was a wonderful homemaker and excellent cook. When your birthday came around, she loved to fix you one of her famous fried chicken dinners and her delicious one egg cake. She also enjoyed camping and fishing with her family and in her later years, she loved for anyone to stop by and visit.

Julia is preceded in death by her husband, Bruce, her son, Calvin, and her sister, Juanita Parker-Ward.
Survivors include her children, Anthony and Shari Brooks, Dena and Danny Reed, Keith and Leigh Brooks, and Roland and Caroline Brooks; ten grandchildren, Bryan and Elosia Brooks, Jason and Tisha Brooks, Wes and Jeannie Reed, Charlee and Dustin Green, Benji Brooks, Cody Brooks, Kasey and Christy Brooks, Savannah and Cassidy Cox, Chase Brooks, and Bailey and Aaron Schenk; thirteen great grandchildren; two great, great grandchildren; her brother, Stephen and Lana Kerbow; her special cousin whom she loved like a sister, Peggy and Bob Burchfield; her very special sister, Joyce and Elton Pax; and several nieces and nephews whom she loved.

The family would like to thank her nurses at BSA Hospice of the Southwest, and to Lisa Knaff and her staff, Sarah, Jasmine, and Margie who were so gracious and loving to her.
