Josephine Lopez, 97, of Canyon, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. A vigil and Rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. The funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at St. Ann’s, with Father Scott Raef as celebrant. Interment will follow at Dreamland Cemetery.

Josephine was born in Laguna Seca, NM on January 4, 1929, to Miguel and Victoria Chavez, and grew up in Sena, New Mexico with a brother (Benito) and sister (Lucinda). Josephine met and married the love of her life, Trinidad Lopez, on December 28, 1949 in Villaneuva, New Mexico. They shared nearly 60 years of marriage and were blessed with 15 children, 12 of whom survived into adulthood. In total, their union produced 15 children, 33 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren. Early in her marriage, while living in Villaneuva, New Mexico and other small communities, Josephine’s most important role was being a “mom” and homemaker. In 1963, the family permanently moved to the Muleshoe, Texas area where she later began working various jobs to help support the family, including both the restaurant and nursing home industries. In 1982, the family moved to Canyon, Texas where Josephine worked at Palo Duro Hospital until her retirement.

Josephine’s life was deeply rooted in her Catholic faith and guided by faith, love, and hope. Through faith, she found strength and joy in both life’s challenges and blessings. She treated family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and strangers alike with compassion, kindness, and respect. Her enduring hope allowed her to see the good in others and to be grateful for each day’s simple gifts.

Josephine was preceded in death by her parents, Miguel and Victoria Chavez, brother, Benito, sisters, Lucinda and Genoveva, husband, Trinidad Lopez, Sr., daughter, Mary, twin sons, John and Johnny, son, Trinidad Jr., and grandchildren Erik Lopez, Adrian Dominguez, Michael Damian Guillan and Michelle Flowers.

Josephine is survived by her children; Rick (Pam) Lopez, Anna (Joe) Gutierrez, Alice (Thompson) Mayberry, Martin (Becky) Lopez, Agnes (Robert) Posadas, Bernadette Guillan, and Genie Baca all of Canyon, Arthur (Rhonda) Lopez, and Michael Lopez of Amarillo, Stella (Ruben) Cervantez of Idalou, and Louise Lopez of Sanford, FL. She is also survived by 29 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Josephine will be remembered as the “Queen” of the Lopez clan, with a loving heart, a wonderful sense of humor, and a quick wit for all of us who loved and adored her.

The family suggests memorials be to St. Ann’s Catholic Church, PO Box 59, Canyon, TX.
