John was born on February 16, 1932, in Trinidad, Texas to parents of Claud Lee and Willie Mae (Plemons) Mosher. He joined the United States National Guard in 1948 and drove troops to Austin from Waco for training when he was just 16 years old. He joined the United States Air Force in 1949 and was stationed at Shepherd AFB in Wichita Falls, TX for basic training. He reported to Automotive Maintenance School at Francis E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, Wyoming. There he attended a revival at an Assembly of God Church and received Christ as his Savior and his life would be forever changed. It was so profound and moving that he never forgot the preacher's name -- G. B McDowell, and the song leader, Paul Glover. John came to know firsthand, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Elmer Dutton, who later became his father-in-law, lovingly mentored him there at the church and throughout a lifetime.
John and Viola's Love Story
John met a beautiful brunette, Viola Pearl Dutton, during his time at Cheyanne. She disliked her middle name which gave him cause to call her "Pearlie" every chance he got. She was just 16 and he was 18 when they married on February 16th, 1950. They spent 10 wonderful days together before the Air Force required his presence in Germany.
For the next 33 months, they continued their romance with hand-written love letters to each other while he was stationed in Germany. John served in the famed 8th Air Force and maintained the hydraulics system on the B52 Stratofortress bomber. John was responsible for aircraft maintenance on the F105 Thunder Chiefs in Thailand known as the "Wild Weasels," squadrons that were crucial during the Vietnam War. John was a veteran of both Korean and Vietnam Wars. John and Viola shared many adventures including the birth of four children, Virginia, Karen, Robert, and Colleen. During John's career with the Air Force he attained the rank of Senior Master Sergeant and worked in Manpower in Management before retiring to Waxahachie Texas in 1970.
After retirement, John attended Southwestern Assemblies of God College and earned a bachelor's degree in Christian Education. He worked and retired from the Waxahachie Independent School District and began volunteering with the Assemblies of God RV Volunteers. Working with other retirees of all walks of life and areas of expertise, the team updated church buildings all over the US. It was a beautiful time for John and Viola as they traveled and enjoyed life and friendships along the way.
John and Viola were married for 68 years before the Lord called his sweetheart home in 2018. He loved the Lord and continued to serve Him in all facets of his life. He left an amazing legacy for his family who will always love him dearly. He will be remembered for his strong faith and a desire to never stop learning about his Lord.
John is survived by his children, Virginia and husband Michael Minter; Karen and husband Rev Ernest Lee Brown; Robert and his wife Frances Mary Patterson-Mosher; Colleen and her husband Kenny Chandler; his 17 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren; and a host of friends and family at Freedom Fellowship Church in Canyon.
