John Johnson

John Kelly Johnson, 65, of Canyon, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, July 20, 2023 at Hillside Christian Church in Canyon with Trae Sweatt and Jared Peddy officiating. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors.

John was born May 17, 1958 in Abilene, Texas to Bill and Sue (Newman) Johnson. He graduated from Canyon High School and attended both South Plains College and Abilene Christian University. At the age of 28, he married the love of his life, Patricia Smith, on August 16, 1986 in Amarillo. They spent 28 wonderful years together before she preceded him in death on April 25, 2015. Together they had three children and lived in Phoenix for 20 years before relocating back to Canyon.

John was the President of Gold Star Trust Company (formerly Colonial Trust Company) for 27 years. Most recently, he served as the Chaplain at Happy State Bank.

John was an Elder at Hillside Christian Church in Canyon. He was a very active member of the Canyon Lions Club, and served as a board member of the FCA at West Texas A&M University.

John was an avid sports fan who will be remembered for his kindness and generosity. He had the most contagious laugh, lighting up the room with his reaction to slapstick humor. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who was always ready with a listening ear and full of compassion for those around him. He was known for his calm, steady presence, and served as a source of spiritual wisdom and comfort for so many. John had an unwavering faith and trust in the Lord, which was evident throughout his life as well as throughout his illness.

Survivors include his daughter, Lindsey Johnson; two sons, Marcus Johnson and wife, Sophie, Hayden Johnson and wife, Kristen; mother, Sue Johnson; three grandchildren, Lynleigh, Lincoln, Asher; and one grandchild on the way, Dakota; his siblings, Jim Johnson and wife, Faye, Janna Hill and husband, Mark, Jennifer Land and husband, Brad; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the FCA at West Texas A&M University, 5111 Canyon Dr, Amarillo, TX 79110.
