The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. on Sunday, July 12, 2015 at Brooks Chapel. Joan Payne Hamblen was born April 14, 1938 to Travis W. Payne III and Roma Sprawls Payne in the Ralph Switch/Swisher County community. She graduated from Canyon High School and married the love of her life, Stewart "Guy" Hamblen immediately on June 1, 1956. Joan worked as a secretary for the Canyon School District Offices, and then later assisted her husband Guy with clerical duties in his business, Canyon "Texas Body Shop". Joan loved picking up Christina and Christopher after school, when they were very young taking them for ice cream treats. She and Guy also loved following, supporting & watching the kids & grandkids play whatever sports or activities they were involved with; such as football, soccer, hockey, ballet, martial arts, or drama. A few highlights she would often mention were the Canyon Lady Eagles Basketball State Championship trips to Austin with Denice in 1974 and runner-up in 1975, and then grandson Josh's State Championship Semi-final game in Dallas at Texas/Cowboy Stadium in 2000. Wren and Denice were also involved in softball and track. She and Guy loved to go to Kimbrough Stadium to watch the grandsons play Canyon Eagle football, or watch West Texas A&M Men's football. They loved watching Lady Buff basketball or volleyball games in The Box on campus. She and Guy loved financially providing for the grandkids to go on special church winter ski trips or summer camps. Joan loved playing bridge, bingo, going to Senior Citizens daily for lunch, chatting with all her lady friends by phone and attending the Methodist, and Cowboy Churches until being home bound or in in-care facilities over the past four years. She loved singing old gospel hymns along with others. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Richmond Payne in 1995, Travis William Payne, Jr. in 1997, and sister, Joyce Payne Patching in 2008. The family would also like to express special thanks and gratitude to the staff of Childers Place, Hospice Care of the Southwest, home and in-care hospice staff members; Cindy Rohrbach RN, Tana Kahout CNA, Brenda Ackley CNA, Brandy Caple RN, Kim Williams RN, Kent Warren CNA, Suzy Alexander CNA, and Lydia Schacher of Nazareth, Texas. survivors include her husband, Stewart "Guy" Hamblen of Canyon; two daughters, Roma Denice Hamblen Erdman Small and husband, Douglas Small of Amarillo, and Derinda Carol "Wren" Hamblen of Canyon. She was greatly loved by six (6) grandchildren; Christina Erdman Borowski and husband, Tony Borowski of Commerce City, Colorado, Chris Erdman of Amarillo, Jessica Small Rue and husband, Jake Rue of Amarillo, Jerrid Small and wife, Bailey Small of Bossier City, Louisiana, Josh Small of Canyon, and Lauren Small of Lubbock. She was a wonderful great grandmother to fourteen great grandchildren; Lukasz and Markus Borowski, Tyler, Abby, Aden, Lily, Madeline and Alexis Coffee/Rue, Landon, Reed, Elli Kate Small, and Kylee, Kynslee, and Jaxson Small. The family requests that memorials be made to the Canyon Senior Citizen's, 1719 5th Avenue, Canyon, TX.79015.
