Jim Peggram, 93, of Amarillo, formerly of Canyon, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. Graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, May 2, 2025 at Lakeview Cemetery in Floydada. Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at the First Baptist Church Chapel of Amarillo with Dr. Howard K. Batson, pastor, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 1, 2025 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon.
Jim was born on July 24, 1931 in Quail, Texas to Roy and Lola (Smithers) Peggram. He graduated from Quail High School in 1949 where he participated in basketball and boxing. He won the Golden Glove Championship while attending Frank Phillips on a basketball scholarship. He earned an education degree from West Texas State College in 1954 and taught one year at Quail ISD before he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1955. He was honorably discharged in 1957. In 1959 he taught junior high Social Studies at Kress. He then earned a master's degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1967. From there, he accepted a position of high school principal in Nazareth, Texas where he spent 19 years before retiring.
Jim married Shirley Bishop at the Joseph A. Hill Chapel on the WT Campus. She preceded him in death in 2014. He married Betty Lyles in 2016, and they resided in Canyon until 2019, when they moved to Amarillo. They were faithful members of the First Baptist Church of Canyon and then the First Baptist Church of Amarillo. In addition to his profession in education, Jim also thoroughly enjoyed ranching at the family home in Quail. At the time of his death, he was still driving a tractor and taking care of the cattle there. He also enjoyed having the family home in Quail restored.
Jim is also preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Kimberly Wellborn, two brothers, Billy Jo and Gene, and two sisters, Mabel and Opal.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Peggram of the home; daughter, Kristi Pennington and husband, Mike of Hendersonville, TN; 5 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.
