Jim was born on May 17, 1939 to Ross and Opal Craig. He lived much of his life in Canyon. After graduating from Canyon High School, Jim signed with manager Norman Petty, a record producer who managed other singers such as Buddy Holly. Later in life, Jim ranched on the land that his grandparents settled early on in Randall County in 1900 between Canyon and Happy, Texas. Jim would then move on and become a psychotherapist and counselor, with a focus around working with those who struggled with drug and alcohol dependency. Through his work and counseling, Jim impacted so many lives for the better.
Jim may have been better known for his love of golf. If he wasn't working, you more than likely would find him on the golf course. His passion for golf came from his father, who played a big role in helping to start the Canyon Country Club. Not only did he love the game, but he was also incredibly good at it too, winning several local tournaments and championships along the way, with a personal best score of 59. However, Jim's greatest love was for his family. He was a dedicated father, taking on the responsibility of being a single parent and raising his son for several years, before marrying the love of his life, Rita. Nothing mattered more to Jim than his family, especially his grandchildren as well as his extended family he was blessed with when he married Rita.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Albert 'Al' Craig, and sister, Betty Ross Howard.
Survivors include his wife, Rita Craig; daughter, Cindy Craig; son, John Craig and wife, Brandy; four grandchildren, Kameron, Brian, Layton, and Annistyn Craig; along with several nephews and nieces. He is also survived by his extended family, stepson, Toby Gibson and wife, Deidra; stepdaughter, Tonda Wood and husband, Don; three step grandchildren, Lindsey Keaton and husband, Blair, Kasey Preston and husband, Kyle, and Lane Wood and wife Dani; and eight grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to High Plains Children's Home, PO Box 7448, Amarillo, Texas 79114 or to Anna Street Church of Christ, 2310 Anna St., Amarillo, Texas 79106.
