Jack Gerald Nunley, Sr. passed away on August 27, 2015 at 1:30 A.M. at the age of 87 surrounded by family. Services will be on Saturday, August 29, 2015, fellowship of family and friends will begin at 9:00 a.m. until the celebration of life services at 10:00 a.m. at Arden Road Baptist Church in Amarillo, Texas, Pastor Dale Bigham officiating. Graveside services will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon, Texas. Born in Seymour, Texas on May 1, 1928 to Emery and Leela Nunley, Jack was a true "Jack"-of-all trades from manager to musician to family man to community volunteer. He began his education in Lake City, Colorado and graduated third in his class in 1946 from Canyon High School. Jack married Helen Spencer on May 8, 1949 in a double ring ceremony with Jim Spencer and Francis Markham in Clovis, New Mexico. Helen preceded him in death on July 29, 2002 after 53 years of marriage. Jack worked at Taylor and Sons Grocery in Hereford, Texas from 1946 until his retirement in the spring of 1969. Jack then worked for Deaf Smith County from 1970 through 1980. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 60 years, the Rotary Club for 50 years, and received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award in 1989. Jack was the 1st Captain of the Deaf Smith County Deputy Reserves of 1970. Jack was also a member of a bluegrass band, played just about any instrument by ear, and had the opportunity to open for Dottie West at the Hereford Opry. He was recognized as "Artist of the Month" at the Deaf Smith County Library several times. In 1971, Jack was honored to receive a Father of the Year award after his daughter, Leta, submitted the winning letter. In January of 2003, Jack married Allene Evert Brown Timmons. He was also preceded in death by his parents; four siblings and their spouses; a grandchild; lifelong travel companion, Kenneth Ray Robertson; along with several nieces and nephews. Jack's family is grateful to the compassionate team of doctors and nurses who cared for him, as well as many friends who showered him with love, comfort, and prayers throughout his life. Survivors include his wife, Allene; four children, Annie Lee Ruland and husband, Rodger, Jack Gerald Nunley, Jr., James Dennis Nunley, Leta May Nolen and husband, David; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; six step-children; thirteen step-grandchildren; and fifteen step-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his twin sister, Jerry Geraldine Dutton. The family suggests memorials to the Happy Senior Citizens Club (P.O. Box 275, Happy, Texas 79042) or to the charity of your choice. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 28 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Brooks Chapel.
