Ilona Smith

Services will be 3:00 P.M. Saturday, October 31 at the First Baptist Church with Wayne Sistrunk and Gene Jones, officiating. Interment will be at Dreamland Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 31 from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. at Brooks Chapel. Ilona was born November 9, 1945 in Matador, Texas to Cecil and Winnie Tanner. On August 20, 1966 she married Eddie Mac Smith at Valleyview Church. Ilona was a teacher for 33 years teaching for Happy ISD and Canyon ISD. She took great pride in educating youth from first graders to seniors to nieces and nephews. She developed numerous UIL State Scholastic Champions. Ilona was a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association, Texas State Teachers Association, and the National Honor Society. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Canyon. Ilona loved flowers and was a master gardener. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Darol Alton Tanner. Ilona is survived by her husband, Eddie Mac Smith, of Canyon; son, Eddie "Dale" Smith, of New York, NY; sister, Iva Beck and husband, Billy, of Lamesa; brother, Russell Tanner, of Jefferson; and a dear friend, Betsy Huntington, of Canyon. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Ilona Smith Scholarship Fund in care of The Opportunity Plan, Inc., PO Box 1035, Canyon, TX 79015.
