Graveside services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at Dreamland Cemetery with Debra Huffman, pastor of First Christian Church, officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at Brooks Chapel. Ila Belle Slack Jennings was born on August 20, 1911 in Randall County to T.V. and Sadie Cleveland Slack, pioneers in Randall County. She married James C. Jennings in Portales, NM on July 9, 1931, and he preceded her in death on May 13, 1999. She received her BA and Masters in Education from West Texas State University and first taught at Wildorado. She also taught at Palo Duro School, east of Canyon, Canyon, Happy, and Amarillo, retiring after 25 years. She was a member of First Christian Church, Texas Retired Teachers Association, Canyon Retired Teachers Association, AARP, and Canyon Community Duplicate Bridge Club. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Mary E. Talbot and Sally Hollmann, three sisters, and three brothers. Survivors include one daughter, Jimile Brissey, of Amarillo; one son, James T. Jennings and wife, Sheri, of Canyon; one sister, Jean Lockhart, of Austin; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Dreamland Cemetery, PO Box 38, Canyon, TX 79015, or a favorite charity.
