Howard 'Sarge' Blevins

Howard ‘Sarge’ Blevins, 86, of Canyon, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Friday, March 6, 2026, at Brooks Chapel.

Howard was born on April 28, 1939, in Marion, Virginia to William and Mary (Crewy) Blevins. He joined the U.S. Army while still in high school and married Gracie Mae Sutherland on December 2, 1958, in Marion. He was retired military and after twenty-two years of military service – including deployments to Vietnam (twice), Thailand, Turkey, Germany and Hawaii- he was transferred to Canyon in 1975 to work with the ROTC program at West Texas State University. He retired from WT as the transportation supervisor after twenty years.

Howard was a VFW life member and former Commander. He was a hotrod and car racing enthusiast and loved building race cars as well as racing them. He also enjoyed watching the NFL, playfully teasing his grandchildren, and was a master storyteller.

Howard was preceded in death by seven brothers, two sisters, and one great granddaughter, Abigail.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Gracie Blevins; daughter, Patti Blevins; son, Scott Blevins and wife, Misty; four grandchildren, Taylor Blevins and wife, Ally, Ty Blevins and wife, Ashley, James Mardis, and Jason Mardis and wife, Megan; and nine great grandchildren.
