Houstene Reece, also known as ""Housie"" and ""Nannie,"" was granted her angel wings at the age of 79 in her home in Canyon, Texas, on Tuesday, February 12, 2013. Her final days were spent with her family. Her loved ones thought it was fitting that she passed so close to Valentine's Day, a day meant for expressing and celebrating love. Houstene was born in Canyon, Texas on October 28, 1933, to Houston and Bertha Morris Prichard. As the fourth and final daughter, she was named in honor of her father, Houston. Houstene was a graduate of Canyon High School. She married Bailey Reece on April 4, 1954, at the West Texas State University JA Hill Chapel. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She raised her children in Tulia, Texas, then spent the next twenty years in Spur, Texas. She and her husband retired in Canyon, which was already home to her three children and six grandchildren. Houstene was passionate about her family, especially when it came to spoiling her grandkids. They Dubbed her The Best Nannie Ever and would sometimes hide in her closet (known as the Mall because they thought it was big) so they didn't have to go home. In her retirement, Houstene developed a love for the sport of competitive horse cutting, joined one of the local Red Hatters clubs, volunteered at First Baptist Church, and assisted with fundraising for local non-profit organizations. Her hobbies connected her to new life-long friends whom she deeply cherished. Her simple but genuine kindness touched the hearts of many in a profound way. Her silliness was endearing; her love was never ending; her passion for life was contagious. She judged no one and accepted everyone. She had a gift for gardening and had a natural ability to connect with animals. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters, Colleen Bryant, Louise Turner Davis, and Juanita Banks. Survivors include her husband, Bailey Reece; children, Janet Freeman, Kay Acton, and Rick Reece and wife, Donna; and grandchildren, Kristin and Lauren Freeman, Ashley Acton, Jordan and Hunter Reece, all of Canyon, and Kelsie Stone and husband, Zack, of Memphis, Texas. The family suggests memorials be to the American Cancer Society, 3915 Bell St. Amarillo, TX 79109.
