Gwendolyn (Rusler) Moreland

October 11, 1938 — April 29, 2024

Gwendolyn (Rusler) Moreland, 85, of Canyon, went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 29, 2024. A Celebration of her Life is scheduled for Saturday, July 6 at 1:00 pm at University Church of Christ in Canyon with David Lough officiating.

Gwen was born on October 11, 1938 in San Angelo to Johnnie and Retha (Young) Rusler. She received her Bachelor's Degree from Howard Payne University and her Master of Education degree from West Texas State University (now WTAMU). She started the homebound program in the Canyon Independent School District and worked for the district for over 30 years as a homebound teacher and autism consultant.

Gwen was a resident of Canyon since 1967. She was a longtime member of University Church of Christ and a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Chi, Kappa Delta Pi, Who's Who among students in American Universities and Colleges, Federation of Texas and A&M University Mother's Club.

Gwen loved the Lord and found great joy in sharing her faith, as well as her Biblical and historical knowledge with her dear friends in the Ladies Bible Class. She looked forward to watching or listening to Texas Aggie football games every fall. She treasured every opportunity she had to travel and experience the world and other cultures…she never met a stranger, only a new friend. She cherished the relationships she built with all of her students and their families over the years.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Winfred V. (Butch) Rusler and Milton Kyle Rusler, her parents, sister, Patricia Rusler, and her son, Hal Moreland.

Survivors include her daughter, Sabrina Neeley and husband, Grant of Dayton, Ohio; granddaughter, Jordan Neeley of San Francisco, California; two brothers, Ken Rusler and wife, Sue of Canyon, and Clifford Rusler of Canyon; niece Tiffany Reyes and husband, Daniel of Canyon; great nephew, Wayd Rusler and wife, Vanessa of Hurricane, Utah; 10 nieces and nephews; 14 great nieces and nephews; and many informally adopted WT students and their children

The family would like to thank the medical professionals and staff at BSA Hospital, particularly in the David Kritser Rehabilitation Unit, as well as BSA Hospice of the Southwest and Hillside Heights for the care and compassion they provided to Gwen in the last month of her life. Additionally, the family appreciates the wonderful care and assistance that Ramona Reyes and so many of Gwen's neighbors and church family provided over the years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to High Plains Children's Home, University Church of Christ India Missions program, BSA Hospice or other organizations that support children and/or education.
