Grady Wayne 'G.W.' Chappell, 87, of Canyon, passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2024. Services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 3, 2024 at the First Baptist Church of Silverton with Pastor G.J. Walton officiating. Burial will follow at Silverton Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon.
Grady was born on November 16, 1936 in Briscoe County to Andrew and Glen (Graham) Chappell. He farmed in Briscoe County for many years and married Veneta Sweek in 1967. They were extremely involved in Young Farmers and Young Homemakers while there. They moved to Canyon in 1992 where he was self-employed, installing and servicing water softening systems.
Grady was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Silverton and the First Baptist Church of Canyon. He was a 50-year Mason with Masonic Lodge #730 and served for a time as Senior Steward. He was a longtime devoted member of Widowed Persons Service where he served as president for many years and was currently serving as Parliamentarian. He was also an active and loyal member of Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary after moving to Canyon.
Grady had a passion for service, helping people in any way he could. If someone was in need, he found a way to help. He lived for his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren which brought him great joy.
Grady is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Veneta, son, Terry Chappell, grandson, Brandon Joe Valdez, and his six siblings, Wilbur, Dick, and Harley Chappell, Opal Grabbe, and Bonnie and Ruby Chappell.
Survivors include his six children, Jimmy Chappell and wife, Pam of Tioga, Reba Chappell Threinen of San Antonio, Ronnie Hale and partner, Larrisa of Canyon, Donna Valdez of Amarillo, Cynthia Beck and husband, Jerry of Quitaque, and Stacie Cuellar and husband, George of Canyon; 17 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren with one on the way; two great, great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Rhonda Williams and husband, Terry of Silverton; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
