Grace Augusta Ehle of Amarillo, Texas, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior, December 16, 2024, at the age of 96. Memorial services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, January 10, 2025 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Amarillo with Pastor Ricky Black officiating. Private interment will be in Llano Cemetery.
Grace was born to Erwin Aude and Regina Aude, March 2, in Pierce (Kewaunee), Wisconsin. She had an older sister, Dorothy, that lived one week after birth and an older brother, Don. She married the love of her life, Robert 'Bob' Christian Ehle, Jr., February 8, 1946, residing in Artesia until they moved to Rockford, Illinois. In 1959, they moved to Amarillo, Texas for his job with Natural Gas Pipeline. Grace and Bob were transferred to Houston, Texas in 1969 where they lived for over 40 years.
Grace's life was one of love and devotion to her family and friends. She had a sweet spirit and was loved by all. As a child, Grace grew up on a farm in Wisconsin. Although her family moved frequently, all her life she had fond memories of farm life. She loved telling her family about her pet cow, Tilly, and enjoyed collecting and decorating with farm animal décor.
She began high school in Wisconsin, but her life was forever changed when she met Bob. One of Grace's favorite past times was dancing, particularly the polka, which is how she met Bob. They met at a dance in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
He swept her off her feet and she moved to New Mexico with her mother to marry Bob. One thing he promised his mother-in-law was that Grace would finish high school, and she did, graduating from Artesia High School in 1947. Bob's nickname for Grace was "Goldilocks". They had 3 children -Susan, Robert, and Kathryn.
Grace loved to tell her children stories about walking to school in the snow as a child, hauling milk to the cheese factory, and family Christmas's that were so cold that when they left the house, they would take a shot of Peppermint Schnapps and bundle up in blankets to stay warm. She was really good about reminding her family of how she and Bob began married life with wooden crates as furniture.
Grace loved and cherished her family. One of her greatest joys was being a wife, mom, grandma and great-grandma. Since Bob was a pilot and gone frequently, Grace pretty much took care of the household. As was stated once, "she was the glue of the family." She was very involved in her family's lives and activities. She always made herself available to her family and helped them anytime she was asked. Grace delighted in family gatherings and loved to host them for any occasion.
Grace had several hobbies over the years: tennis, bowling, macrame, ceramics, and of course, dancing. She and Bob danced regularly with friends at the SPJST lodge in Houston. For many years, she began her mornings with a 3-mile walk.
Her family had the pleasure of celebrating Bob and Grace's 50th wedding anniversary in 1996. It was fun to celebrate this milestone with them. They were married 60 years.
In her later years, Grace had the opportunity to travel to two places dear to her heart. Germany, where her parents had immigrated from and Israel, because of the life of Jesus.
Grace embraced her Lutheran Christian faith and found joy in reading the Bible, living out her beliefs and actively participating in church. She attended numerous Bible studies, was a member of the Altar Guild, and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.
Grace moved back to Amarillo in 2009, 3 years after Bob passed away. She lived with her daughter Susan until her health began declining with dementia. Although she had memory issues, she was always cheerful, singing and greeted everyone with a smile. Her last 4 years she lived at Hidden Happiness Care Home where she had a loving caregiver, Jessica. She left us peacefully and is now truly home in the presence of God.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents, Erwin and Regina Aude; her brother and sister-in-law, Don and Jan Aude; and her beloved husband, Bob Ehle.
