Canyon

Gloria Gray, 87, of Canyon, passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025. Services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at the First Methodist Church of Canyon with Rev. Matt Wolfington officiating. Burial will follow in Dreamland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 at Brooks Chapel.

Gloria was born on September 30,1938 in Lubbock to Estell Allen and Effie Kathrine (Brownd) Houston. She was a 1957 graduate of Abernathy High School and attended McMurry University before completing her Bachelor of Education degree at West Texas State University. She began her 30-year teaching career in Tulia, teaching Physical Education, in 1963, and then moved to Canyon ISD and taught 5th grade Math and Social Studies until her retirement in 1993.

Gloria was a longtime, faithful member of the First Methodist Church of Canyon where she was active in the Methodist Women’s Circle and the Crusaders Sunday School Class.

In her younger years, Gloria relished spending time on Mom and Daddy Bill’s ranch in Wagon Mound where she helped work the cattle with her family. She also enjoyed riding horses and four wheelers on vacations in Red River and Ruidoso, New Mexico over the years. Her most favorite pastimes were watching and supporting her grandchildren in anything they were involved in and working in her yard, tending her flowers. She also treasured her many ‘Sister Trips’ and RV trips with her siblings and their families.

Gloria is preceded in death by her parent, her husband, Jerry Gray, and a grandson, Dillon Bird.

Survivors include four children, Scott Gray and wife, Kasi of Amarillo, Amberly Cogswell of Canyon, Cameron Gray and wife, Amanda of South Lake, and Amie Ramos and husband, Richard of Childress; eight grandchildren, Nick Gray, Julia Bird, Lake Youngblood, Chord Cogswell, Colin Gray, Cooper Gray, Houston Carrasco, Harley Carrasco, and Carson Ramos; three siblings, Mac Houston and wife, Rita, Billie Johnson and husband, Ron, and Rhetta Riley and husband, Clark all of Abernathy; and many loved nieces and nephews.
