George R. Blake, Jr., 74, of Canyon, died Saturday, February 1, 2003 in Canyon. Services will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at the University Church of Christ with Bob Shepard, Elder and Bible Chair Director, and David Lough, Pastor, officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 6:00pm - 8:00 pm at Brooks Chapel. Burial will be in Happy Cemetery, Happy, Texas. George was born on March 26, 1928 at Winfield, Kansas to George Russell and Frances Bugg Blake, Sr. He graduated from Winfield High School and attended Abilene Christian University from 1946 - 1948. He owned and operated a Dry Cleaners for fifteen years in Winfield, Kansas from 1948-1964. He married Helen Titlow in Abilene on January 14, 1950. He received an Associates Degree in Law Enforcement in 1974 from Johnson County Community College while living in Lawrence, Kansas. He later earned three advanced law enforcement certificates. He moved to Lubbock in 1978 and was Head of Security at Lubbock Christian University. He was engaged in law enforcement for 25 years, last being at Randall County Sheriff?s Department, moving to Canyon in 1980. He then retired in 1990. He was a member of the University Church of Christ. His greatest achievement and joy was being a dad and granddad. He was the best! Survivors include his wife, Helen, of the home; three sons, George R. Blake, III and wife Barbara, of Ft. Worth, TX, Paul Blake, and wife Denise, of Lubbock, and Chris Blake, and wife Ellen, of Denton; one daughter, Julie Hodges, and husband Mike, of Plainview; three sisters, Margaret Groves, of Starkville, MS, Lucy Moudy, of Happy, and Mary House, of Albuquerque, NM; seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
