Freda was born on August 12, 1940 in Smyer, Texas to Rev. James and Eunice (Cook) O'Neill. She grew up sitting on the front pew in church listening to her father preach and her mother play the piano. Her parents taught her to love Jesus, and she gave her heart to Jesus when she was 8 years old, thus beginning a life of devotion to the Lord.
Freda graduated from Abernathy High School in 1958 and married Marvin Hays Taylor on December 22, 1958 in Abernathy. She then received her associate's degree from Draughon's Business College in Lubbock. She worked at several bookkeeping jobs through the years, but her favorite was being financial secretary for Highland Baptist Church in Lubbock because she felt she was doing God's will there.
After Marvin retired from TXDOT, he and Freda enjoyed traveling fulltime for the next 12 years, visiting every state in the U.S. except Hawaii. They also enjoyed volunteering at Palo Duro Canyon State Park as camp hosts and working in the Visitor Center.
Freda was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Canyon where she was an integral part of the quilting ministry for many years. She also enjoyed playing the piano, crocheting numerous potholders, and playing the card game, Hand and Foot. Her family was precious to her, and although spaghetti was not her forte, they will lovingly remember her delicious homemade rolls and cinnamon rolls. Freda felt her calling in life was to be an encourager, and she lived that calling exceptionally well.
Freda was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Marvin Hays Taylor, her parents, a daughter, Tamera Estrada, brother, Charles O'Neill, and sister, Martha Oswalt.
Survivors include her son, Talton Taylor and wife, Kim of Canyon; son-in-law, Eduardo Estrada of Edinburg; three grandchildren, Dustin Taylor and wife, Kim of Rincon, GA, Aaron Taylor and wife, Lauren of Flower Mound, and Jennifer Noble and husband, Nate of Amarillo; and ten great grandchildren, Adain, Kadance, Kailin, Gavin, Oliver, Hudson, Finley, Joshua, Annie Mae, and Austin.
Because of Freda's years of dedication to the quilting ministry, the family suggests memorials be to the First Baptist Quilting Ministry, 1717 4th Avenue, Canyon, TX 79015.
