Esther Spaulding, 92, went home to heaven on December 3, 2024 in Amarillo, Texas. Memorial services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at Brooks Chapel in Canyon with Gene Jones officiating. The family will receive friends in the chapel following the service.
Esther Irene Pennington was born on November 13,1932 to Elijah "Bide" and Clara Pennington in Lakin, Kansas. She was the youngest of nine children. Esther married Leslie Spaulding on Feb 4, 1955 at Fort Bliss, Texas where he served in the U.S. Army. Soon after their marriage, they were stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. During their 63 years of marriage, Les and Esther made their home in many places including: Fairbanks, Alaska; Manhattan, Kansas; Atchison, Kansas; Liberal, Kansas; Scottsdale, Arizona; and Canyon, Texas. Esther and Les kept busy with their kids and grandkids' activities, bridge club, they were always active in their church, they were greeters at the play TEXAS, and Esther served on the board of the Amarillo Art Institute.
Esther was a famed artist with her work featured in the 2014 program of the play TEXAS, The Kansas Artists Postcard Series XIII, a mural at Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kansas, a mural at Texhoma Christian School library in Sherman, Texas and a privately commissioned mural in Scottsdale, AZ. Her work was displayed at the Amarillo Art Institute and featured on a billboard in Amarillo. She also illustrated two children's books.
Les and Esther were always active in their church and Esther remained a member of First Baptist Church, Canyon, Texas.
Loved ones who have gone before Esther and are waiting to welcome her home include her parents, 3 brothers, 3 sisters, a son in law, and the love of her life, Leslie.
Esther is survived by two sisters, Mary Lambert of Scottsdale, AZ and Nine Bailey of Independence, MO; son, Leslie Spaulding, Jr. and wife, Patty, of Amarillo, Tx; a son, Greg Spaulding and wife, Pam, of Manhattan, Ks; a daughter, Jane Dougherty and husband, Kevin, of Canyon, Tx; and daughter, Deborah Hendley and husband, Ted, of Amarillo, Tx; 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, and sister in law, Phyllis Wasson of Meade, Ks.
The family wants to give a special "thank you" to Park Place Towers and to the Caretakers at Evan Homes & Hamilton Care Center. We can't thank you enough for loving on mom and taking such good care of her.
