Memorial Services will be at 4:00 P.M. on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at the First Presbyterian Church of Canyon with The Rev. Dr. Don McDonald, pastor, officiating. Graveside services will be at Brookside Memorial Park in Houston at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003 with Rev. Jim Butler officiating. Mr. Cox was born on a farm in Magnet, Texas. He spent his youth in Wharton, Texas. In 1950 he graduated from Wharton High School after lettering in tennis, baseball and four years in basketball. He attended Wharton County Junior College on a basketball scholarship and was a member of the National Junior College Championship basketball team. He continued his education at the University of Texas, Austin, where he earned both Bachelor of Business Administration and Doctor of Jurisprudence degrees. He married Diana Hester in Houston in 1956. After serving in the United States Army at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, he took a position at West Texas State College, School of Business in Canyon. He has been a practicing attorney in Canyon since 1960. He opened his first law office with George Dowlen. Subsequently, he became a partner with A.W. Lair and Dale Williams. His last years of practice were spent with Gene McGlasson after forming the firm of McGlasson and Cox. He served as Canyon city attorney, Randall County Judge, and legal counsel for the Canyon Independent School District and the former First National Bank of Canyon. He was a member of the Amarillo Bar Association. His love of sports led him to coach Kiwanis girls softball and boys Little League baseball. He renewed his skills on the tennis court and won many area tennis tournaments in menA???s singles, menA???s doubles and mixed doubles. He was Kiwanis president and was honored as Kiwanian of the Year. A member of the First Presbyterian Church, Canyon, he served as deacon and elder. He presently was on the board of directors of the Wells Fargo Bank, Canyon. The Canyon branch of the National Secretaries Association International selected him as Boss of the Year, and West Texas A&M business students honored him as favorite professor. Elton is best remembered as a firm and steadfast man. He was a dedicated and loving friend, an honest and hard working attorney, an accomplished athlete, a devoted husband, and a proud father and grandfather. His life is a testament of the American dream. Survivors include his wife, Diana, of Canyon; his daughter, Kelly Ferguson, and husband, Scott, of Austin; and three grandchildren, Rachel, Walt, and Claire Ferguson, of Austin.
