Helen Earlene Davis Petropoulos Fite
Earlene Petropoulos Fite, 94, of Amarillo, formerly of Canyon, was called home on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.
Earlene was born on a farm 18 miles S.W. of Canyon, TX in the Jowell community to Earl and Helen Davis on September 21, 1930. This is where she lived until she began college in 1948. She attended West Texas State University for two years. During this time, she met and married Tommy Petropoulos. They had two children, Earl and Judy.
She later returned back to school receiving her BS degree in 1961 and Master's degree in 1968 from West Texas State University. She began her career in elementary education that would span three decades. She taught fifth grade at Pleasant Valley Elementary for several years. In 1971, she then left the classroom and went into administration. For five years she was a supervisor for a group of Special Education Teachers. During the last 15 years of her career, Earlene was an elementary principal, three years at Mesa Verde School and twelve years at Avondale Elementary School. She retired in 1991. She loved her fellow teachers and friends that she made during those thirty years.
Earlene's husband, Tommy, died in 1986. She was reunited with a schoolmate, Marvin Fite, at a class reunion in 1988. They were married in 1994. Marvin died July 2023.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Judy Phillips and her husband Royse of Amarillo; granddaughters: Shelley Fischbacher and husband Joe of Canyon, Kristy Manes of Amarillo, Kaci O'Neal and husband Shawn of Canyon, Kacie Roth of Lubbock, and Robin Crawford and husband Brandon of Rockport, TX; one grandson, Pete Petropoulos of Woodsboro, TX; great grandchildren: Hannah and Parker Manes, Kinsey and Paisley Fischbacher, Teagan and Tillie O'Neal, and Brooklynn and Molly Ellis. Earlene is also survived by a brother, Ervin Davis of Amarillo, formerly of Canyon.
Earlene was preceded in death by her parents Earl and Helen Davis, husbands Tommy Petropoulos and Marvin Fite, son Earl Petropoulos, and granddaughter, Kayla Petropoulos Ellis.
Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM, Saturday April 19, 2025 at Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon, TX.
