Charles Edward Moss, age 86, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2026. Graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Memory Gardens Cemetery with Dr. Howard K. Batson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Amarillo, officiating.
Charles was born on August 28, 1939, in Amarillo, Texas, to Noble Vincent Moss and Wilma Esther (Baker) Moss, the youngest of the three Moss boys. From an early age, he loved the outdoors, sports, and horses. Some of his fondest childhood memories were made spending summers near Eagle Nest, New Mexico, where he explored the outdoors with his friends.
He graduated from Amarillo High School and went on to attend Oklahoma State University and West Texas State University, earning his Bachelor of Business Administration in 1962. He later received his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas School of Law in 1965. Charles also proudly served his country in the United States Army during the late 1960’s.
Charles built a long and respected legal career in Amarillo, practicing for over 50 years. He was a partner or member of several firms throughout his career and was a member of the State Bar of Texas, Amarillo Bar Association, and the Texas Association of Defense Counsel. He was admitted to practice before all Texas State and Local Courts, Texas Supreme Court, Unites States Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. He was known for his integrity, professionalism, and dedication, being honored with various awards during his career.
He married Janette Ballew on January 11, 1968, and together they raised two children, Tim and Shelley. Charles proudly supported his children in all their activities. He was always there.
The Moss family has deep roots at First Baptist Church of Amarillo, where Charles was a life-long member. He served faithfully for many years as a college department teacher and as a deacon.
In his later years, Charles treasured spending time with his seven grandsons. He loved a good breakfast, sharing a meal with family, and especially looked forward to hosting the grandchildren for Fourth of July fireworks -- something he was already excited about for this year.
Charles professed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and made a point to share his faith and hope with his grandsons, often quoting and finding comfort in John 3:16 during his final days.
Charles is preceded in death by his wife, Janette of Amarillo, his parents, a brother Jim Moss of Amarillo, and a brother Kenneth Moss of Albuquerque.
Survivors include his son, Tim and wife, Nele of Gainesville, Texas; daughter Shelley McGill and husband, Justin of Amarillo; seven grandsons, Taylor, Tripp and wife, Briklan, Tanner and wife, Cadence, Luke, Nathan Lancaster, Braden Lancaster, Dayton Lancaster, and one great-grandson, Asher.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church, 1208 S. Tyler St., Amarillo, Texas 79101.
